Slick Rick Becomes US Citizen After 23 Years

Saturday, 16 April 2016

As far back as one can remember, Bronx bred rapper (by way of England) Slick Rick, faced deportation issues. Well, the fight is finally over. This past Friday marked the first day of Rick’s US citizenship.

After pleading guilty to a double count of attempted murder, which resulted in a five year prison stay, Rick’s freedom was threatened by immigration officials. He managed to maintain his innocence by letting everyone know he fired his gun out of self-defense. Slick said that the man he shot repeatedly threatened both his and his mom’s life.

The New York Daily News is reporting that “his plea deal meant he was a British citizen convicted of a violent crime, and officials wanted him gone.”

Slick Rick aka Ricky Walkers took to social media to express his sentiments regarding his newly found freedom. He said, “I am so proud of this moment — and so honored to finally become an American citizen.”

Rick is actually pretty lucky because several attempts at deportation were tried prior to this victorious moment. He was almost arrested back in 2002 after he did a show with Erykah Badu out in Florida.

“This has been a long time coming for me, and I am relieved to finally put this long chapter behind me. I want to thank everyone — my family, friends and fans — who have supported me and stuck by me over these 23 years. I am truly blessed, and stay tuned, I will have more to announce soon.”

He later took to Instagram to a picture of an American flag-themed eye patch in which the caption reads, “#SlickRickVictory.”
